The Complete Guide to Engraved Glassware in New Zealand

The Complete Guide to Engraved Glassware in New Zealand

Whether you're hunting for a personalised gift that won't end up at the back of the cupboard, or looking to put your brand's name on something that gets used every single day, engraved glassware is hard to beat. It's elegant, it's practical, and unlike a printed mug or a branded pen, a laser engraving is permanent. It doesn't fade, peel, or wash off after the fifteenth trip through the dishwasher.

At A Personal Touch, we engrave glassware for all kinds of occasions and all kinds of customers, from someone wanting a single champagne flute personalised for their mum's birthday, to businesses ordering branded whiskey tumblers for client gifts. Here's everything you need to know about what we offer, how it works, and what to keep in mind when you're planning your order.

What glassware can be engraved?

Laser engraving works on most glass, and the results are genuinely beautiful. A precision laser etches your text or design directly into the surface of the glass, creating a frosted, tactile finish that catches the light. No ink, no stickers, no transfer paper.

We engrave a wide range of glassware, including:

  • Wine glasses: classic, stemless, and everything in between
  • Champagne flutes: popular for weddings, anniversaries, and celebration gifts
  • Whiskey tumblers: a perennial favourite for groomsmen, Father's Day, and corporate gifts
  • Beer steins and pint glasses: great for sports teams, milestone birthdays, and hospitality venues
  • Shot glasses: fun as wedding favours or party gifts
  • Decanters: a show-stopping personalised gift for serious wine or whisky lovers

If it's glass and you want it engraved, the chances are we can help. We stock most of these items ourselves, but if you're after something specific, such as a particular style, size, or shape, we can often source it. Alternatively, customers are welcome to supply their own glassware (more on that below).

One important note: borosilicate glass cannot be laser engraved. If you're not sure what your glassware is made from, just ask us before placing an order.

Personalised glassware as a gift

There's a reason engraved glassware has been a go-to gift for decades, it's personal, it's useful, and it looks genuinely special. Unlike most generic gifts, it doesn't feel like an afterthought. A wine glass engraved with someone's name and a meaningful date is something they'll actually use, and something they'll keep.

Occasions we engrave for

Weddings are our biggest occasion for glassware. Whether it's a matching pair of champagne flutes for the bride and groom, individual glasses for the entire bridal party, or a decanter as a table centrepiece, weddings and engraved glassware were made for each other. Personalised wedding favours in glass are a step up from the usual bomboniere, and they double as a keepsake guests will actually take home and use.

Anniversaries - a wine glass or whiskey tumbler with the date and initials of a couple is a simple idea that lands every time. First anniversary, twenty-fifth, fiftieth, the personalisation is what makes it feel considered rather than convenient.

Birthdays - a personalised beer mug for a fortieth, a champagne flute for a twenty-first, or a whiskey glass for the person who has everything. If they drink it, you can probably engrave the glass it comes in.

Christmas and Kris Kringle - engraved glassware fits neatly into a higher-end Kris Kringle (Secret Santa) budget and is genuinely useful, which is more than can be said for most novelty gifts.

Bridesmaid and groomsmen proposals - asking your nearest and dearest to be part of your wedding is a big moment. A personalised champagne flute or whiskey tumbler with their name and role makes for a beautiful proposal gift they'll remember, and hold onto long after the wedding.

Father's Day and Mother's Day - a personalised whiskey tumbler for Dad or a wine glass for Mum is a gift that feels genuinely thoughtful, especially when it's engraved with something personal such as a nickname, a date, a message.

Housewarming - a set of personalised wine glasses or a decanter is a generous, practical housewarming gift that feels a cut above the usual bottle of wine.

What can we engrave on glass?

  • Names, initials, and monograms
  • Dates and coordinates
  • Short messages or quotes
  • Custom artwork and illustrations (provided as a digital file)
  • Logos (your own - we cannot engrave copyrighted designs or logos you don't own the rights to)

The more detail in a design, the more our team will check that it will engrave cleanly on glass. Very fine lines can sometimes be difficult to achieve on curved surfaces, and we'll always let you know if something needs simplifying before we begin.

Engraving glassware you supply

We're often happy to engrave glassware you've purchased yourself, whether it's a set of glasses from a favourite retailer or something you've sourced online. There's no minimum quantity, so even a single piece is fine.

A few important things to know before you send your glassware our way:

All glass engraves differently. The make, thickness, and composition of the glass will affect the final finish, and in some cases, the result may differ from what you've seen on standard stock. We cannot guarantee the outcome on customer-supplied glassware.

For this reason, we strongly recommend supplying a sample piece for us to engrave as a trial before committing to a full order. This lets you see exactly how the glass takes the engraving, and it protects both of us from an unwanted surprise on a set of twenty (or a thousand).

Pricing for customer-supplied glassware includes the engraving fee plus a one-off setup fee. Get in touch and we'll give you a quote based on your design and quantity.

Reminder: Borosilicate glass cannot be engraved. If your glassware is borosilicate (common in some kitchenware and scientific-style drinking glasses), please check before sending anything our way.

Branded glassware for business

If your business puts a glass in someone's hand, you should be thinking about what's on it. Branded glassware is one of the most effective promotional products going, it's used repeatedly, it's kept, and every time someone reaches for that glass, they see your name.

We work with hospitality venues, corporate clients, and small businesses across New Zealand to produce branded glassware that actually reflects the quality of the brand behind it. Because the engraving is permanent, unlike screen printing or adhesive decals, it stays sharp and professional for the life of the glass.

Who orders branded glassware from us?

Hospitality venues - restaurants, bars, wineries, and breweries often want glassware that carries their logo or name. Branded glassware adds a layer of professionalism to the customer experience and reduces the likelihood of guests pocketing it (mostly).

Corporate gifting - a branded whisky tumbler or wine glass in a gift box is a high-perceived-value corporate gift that doesn't feel cheap. It's the kind of thing clients and staff actually keep on their desk or at home, rather than re-gifting or quietly discarding.

Events and hospitality - conferences, award ceremonies, product launches, and gala dinners. If your event involves a glass, personalised glassware makes for a memorable takeaway.

Real estate and professional services - client appreciation gifts that have a practical, premium feel without the disposable-gift energy.

Wineries and craft breweries - your glassware is part of your product experience. A branded glass makes the tasting feel more considered.

What we can do for your business

  • Engrave your logo, brand name, or tagline onto any glassware we stock
  • Source specific glassware to match your brand or event requirements
  • Handle low minimum quantities, you're not locked into ordering hundreds of units
  • Work with you on placement, sizing, and design to get the right result
  • Engrave customer-supplied glassware (with the same caveats as above - a sample run is recommended)

Because we're based in Auckland and do our own production in-house, you're not waiting on international shipping or dealing with an offshore supplier who doesn't understand your brief. You talk to us directly, and we produce it here.

What to provide

For business orders, you'll need to supply your logo or artwork as a high-resolution file (AI, EPS, SVG, or high-res PNG). If your branding team has prepared vector files, those will give the cleanest result. We can work with other formats but we'll always let you know if something needs adjusting before we get started.

Pricing is based on the glassware, quantity, and setup requirements. Contact us for a quote - we're straightforward about costs and there are no hidden charges.

How the process works

Getting personalised or branded glassware from us is pretty simple.

  1. Choose your glassware - browse what we stock, or tell us what you're looking for and we'll see if we can source it
  2. Send us your design - a name, a date, a short message, your logo, or custom artwork
  3. We confirm the details - we check your design will work on the glass and confirm sizing and placement with you before we start
  4. We engrave - turnaround is typically 24–48 hours once your order is confirmed (assuming the item is in stock)
  5. We ship it to you - we send anywhere in New Zealand, with delivery usually taking 1–3 days once dispatched. Alternatively, you can collect from us in Pukekohe.

Total time from order to arrival is generally around 2–5 days, though this varies depending on the time of year and your location. If you have a deadline such as a wedding date, an event, a birthday - tell us upfront and we'll let you know if we can make it work.

Why engraving beats printing for glassware

You can get a name printed on a glass, sure. But print on glass is a different proposition to engraving. Printed finishes can chip, fade, and eventually peel. They're also often visually flat, they don't have the texture and quality of an engraved finish.

Laser engraving removes a thin layer of the glass surface itself, creating a frosted, permanent mark that doesn't rely on ink or adhesive. It's more durable, it looks more premium, and it holds its quality for the life of the glass. For personalised gifts, where the whole point is longevity, engraved is where it's at.
